The mg/L and µg/L entries assume the mixture is essentially water at about 1 g/mL, which is the standard assumption in water testing and the reason mg/L and ppm are used interchangeably there. For any other solvent, or for a gas measured by volume, that equivalence does not hold and you need the density to convert properly.

About the ppm converter

Ratios, not measurements

Parts-per notation expresses a ratio between two quantities of the same kind, which makes it dimensionless — the units cancel. That is what allows ppm, ppb, percent and per mille to convert into one another by pure arithmetic, with no physical information required.

It is also the source of the notation's main weakness: it does not record what basis was used. A ppm figure by mass and a ppm figure by volume are different measurements written identically, and for gases they can differ substantially. Careful sources write ppmv or ppmw, or avoid the ambiguity entirely by quoting explicit units like mg/kg.

The mass-based entries in this converter — mg/kg, µg/g, ng/g — are exactly equivalent to the parts-per units and are included because analytical laboratories often report in them. Milligrams per kilogram is precisely parts per million by mass, said in a way that leaves no doubt about the basis.

Why trace concentrations are worth measuring

Parts per million and per billion sound like quantities too small to matter, and for many substances they are. A part per billion is roughly a single second in thirty-two years, or a pinch of salt in ten tonnes of crisps. The reason such levels are measured at all is that biological and chemical effects are not proportional to concentration in any simple way.

Some substances are potent at trace levels, some are actively required in small amounts and harmful in larger ones, and some are harmless at any concentration you are likely to encounter. Fluoride in water is regulated in parts per million; ozone in air in parts per billion. The threshold that matters is always specific to the substance and set by the relevant regulator — the concentration figure alone carries no verdict.

What has changed dramatically is the ability to detect. Analytical instruments now routinely resolve parts per trillion, which means substances are now measurable in places they were always present but invisible. A detection is not by itself a finding of harm, and reading a trace result requires knowing both the applicable limit and the method's detection threshold. Frequently asked questions

Is 1 ppm the same as 1 mg/L?
For dilute aqueous solutions, yes, and that is why water testing uses them interchangeably. One litre of water weighs about one kilogram, so one milligram in one litre is one milligram per kilogram, which is one part per million by mass. The equivalence breaks down for any solvent whose density is not about 1 g/mL, and for concentrated solutions where the dissolved substance changes the density appreciably. The units here are labelled to make that assumption visible.
What is the relationship between ppm and percent?
Percent is parts per hundred, ppm is parts per million, so 1% equals 10,000 ppm. Moving between them is a factor of 10,000: divide ppm by 10,000 to get percent, or multiply percent by 10,000 to get ppm. Per mille — parts per thousand — sits between them at 1‰ = 1,000 ppm.
Does ppm mean by mass or by volume?
It depends on the field, and the notation does not say. In water and soil chemistry it is almost always by mass. In gas measurement it is usually by volume, sometimes written ppmv to be explicit. The two are not interchangeable for gases, because a gas mixture's mass ratio and volume ratio differ by the ratio of molecular masses. This converter works in dimensionless ratios, so it is consistent within whichever basis your source used — but you need to know which that is.
Why is 'parts per billion' ambiguous?
Because 'billion' historically meant different things. The short scale billion — a thousand million — is now standard internationally and is what ppb means everywhere in science. The old long-scale billion, still remembered in parts of Europe, meant a million million, which is the short scale's trillion. Modern usage is settled, but very old documents may need checking, and it is one reason some standards prefer explicit notation like µg/kg over ppb.
