Area factors are the square of the length factors — a square foot is 0.3048² m², not 0.3048 m². Getting that wrong is the single most common conversion mistake in property listings.

About the area converter

Squared factors, and the mistake they cause

Every area unit is the square of a length unit, so its conversion factor is the length factor squared. A foot is 0.3048 metres, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square metres. A yard is 0.9144 metres, so a square yard is 0.83612736 square metres.

Applying the unsquared factor is the most common error in area conversion, and it produces answers that are wrong by a factor of three or more without looking obviously absurd. A quick sanity check helps: a square metre is always about 10.8 square feet, so the square-foot figure should be roughly eleven times the square-metre one.

Property, land and materials

Property listings are where most people meet area conversions. Floor area in India and the US is quoted in square feet; most of Europe uses square metres. Comparing two listings across that divide means converting, and the difference between 100 sq m and 100 sq ft is enormous — one is a family flat, the other a small bedroom.

Materials are the other common case. Flooring, tiles, turf and paint are sold by coverage area, often in units that do not match the ones on your plan. Convert the room and the product to the same unit before dividing, and add an allowance for cuts and waste on top.

How many square feet are in a square metre?
10.7639104. The factor is the square of the length conversion: one metre is 3.28084 feet, and 3.28084² is 10.76. This squaring is why you cannot reuse a length factor for an area.
How big is an acre, really?
43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square metres. The often-quoted comparison is a bit smaller than an American football field including the end zones, or roughly 60% of a football (soccer) pitch. It originally represented the area one team of oxen could plough in a day.
What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 square metres — a square 100 m on each side — and is the metric standard for land. An acre is about 4,047 square metres, so one hectare is roughly 2.47 acres. Land is sold in acres in the US, UK and India, and in hectares across most of Europe.
Why is my converted area so different from what I expected?
Almost always because a length factor was used instead of an area one. Converting 100 square feet by multiplying by 0.3048 gives 30.5, which is wrong; the correct factor is 0.3048², giving 9.29 square metres. If your answer is out by roughly a factor of three, this is why.
