How to use the weight converter
- 1Enter the weight you want to convert in the Value box.
- 2Choose the unit it is currently in, then the unit you want it in.
- 3The result appears immediately, followed by the same weight expressed in every unit — useful when a recipe gives grams and your scale reads ounces.
- 4Press Swap units to flip the direction, or Reset to start again from kilograms and pounds.
Examples
Body weight to stones and pounds
- Input
- 70 kilograms
- Result
- 154.323584 pounds (11 st 0.3 lb)
Divide the pounds by 14 for stones: 154.32 ÷ 14 = 11 stone with 0.32 lb remaining.
A recipe in ounces
- Input
- 8 ounces
- Result
- 226.796185 grams
Cooks usually round this to 225 g, which is close enough for baking but not for anything measured precisely.
Freight in tonnes
- Input
- 2.5 tonnes
- Result
- 5,511.55655 pounds
About the weight converter
Where weight conversion actually bites
Three situations account for most weight conversions: cooking from a recipe written in another country's units, tracking body weight against a target set in a different system, and shipping, where quoted rates and limits switch between kilograms and pounds without much warning.
Cooking is the most error-prone of the three, because volume and weight measures get mixed together. An ounce of flour is a weight; a fluid ounce is a volume, and the two are not interchangeable. If your recipe says 'fl oz', you want the volume converter.
Why the numbers have so many decimals
One pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and every other imperial mass unit is built from it. That definition is what makes conversions here reproducible rather than approximate — the long decimals are the exact value, not noise.
For everyday purposes, rounding is perfectly reasonable. Just round at the end, once, rather than at each step of a multi-stage conversion, where small errors compound in ways that are hard to spot.
