What credit weighting is for

A credit is a rough measure of how much of a semester a subject occupies — contact hours, workload, assessment weight. Weighting the average by credits means a demanding four-credit core subject influences the result twice as much as a two-credit elective, which is the intended behaviour and the reason the system exists.

The formula is Σ(credits × grade point) ÷ Σ(credits). Multiply each subject's grade by its credits, add those products, and divide by the total credits. The working table on this page shows each product so the arithmetic can be checked against a transcript line by line.

The practical implication for a student is that not all subjects are equally worth the effort, at least arithmetically. Improving a grade in a four-credit subject moves the CGPA twice as much as the same improvement in a two-credit one. That is not a recommendation about what to study, but it is a fact worth knowing when time is scarce during an exam period.

The percentage conversion problem

There is no standard mapping from CGPA to percentage, and the confident tone in which various formulas circulate online obscures how genuinely institution-specific they are. The CBSE multiply-by-9.5 rule is the most widely repeated and the most widely misapplied: it was derived from the distribution of marks in CBSE's own examinations, and applying it to an unrelated university's grading scheme produces a number with no basis.

The differences are not trivial. A CGPA of 8.89 becomes 84.4% under CBSE's rule, 81.4% under VTU's published formula, and 88.9% under a straight multiply-by-ten. On an application that asks for a percentage, choosing the wrong one either understates your record or overstates it — and overstating it on a form you sign is a problem of a different kind.

The defensible approach is the one this tool enforces: convert only when you can name the formula your institution publishes, and otherwise present the CGPA as it stands. Most application forms accept a CGPA with its scale stated — '8.89 on a 10-point scale' is unambiguous, verifiable against your transcript, and requires no conversion at all. Where a percentage is genuinely mandatory, your registrar's office is the authority, not a formula found online.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my CGPA not the average of my grade points?
Because it is weighted by credits. A four-credit subject contributes twice as much as a two-credit one, which is the entire purpose of credits. Averaging the grade points directly ignores that and produces a different number whenever the credits differ — it is the most common mistake in calculating a CGPA by hand.
Which CGPA-to-percentage formula is correct?
Whichever one your institution publishes, and only that one. There is no national or international standard. The CBSE × 9.5 rule is widely borrowed by people whose university never adopted it; it was derived from CBSE's own grade distribution and carries no meaning elsewhere. If your institution is not in the list, leave the conversion off and quote the CGPA itself — it is the figure your transcript actually certifies.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is the credit-weighted average for a single semester; CGPA is the same calculation across all semesters completed so far. This calculator does either — enter one semester's subjects for an SGPA, or every subject to date for a CGPA. Some institutions compute the cumulative figure by averaging SGPAs, which gives a slightly different result when semesters carry unequal credits.
Do backlogs and repeated subjects count?
That depends entirely on your institution's rules — some count the improved grade, some average the attempts, some record the original. This calculator uses exactly the subjects and grades you enter, so apply your own institution's rule when deciding what to enter.
