About the number to words converter

Two systems, one number

Most of the English-speaking world groups digits in threes and names each group: thousand, million, billion, trillion. The Indian subcontinent groups the first three digits and then in pairs, naming them thousand, lakh, crore. Both are internally consistent, both are correct, and they produce visibly different writing for the same quantity.

Take ten million. Internationally it is written 10,000,000 and read as ten million. In the Indian system it is written 1,00,00,000 and read as one crore. Neither the comma positions nor the words carry over, which is why financial documents crossing between the two conventions have to be explicit about which is in use.

The systems also diverge in what they name at all. There is no single Indian word for a billion; a hundred crore does the job. Conversely, 'lakh' has no international equivalent — you would say a hundred thousand. Translating between them is therefore regrouping and renaming at once, not a word-for-word substitution.

Why the words matter more than the digits

Writing an amount in words is a fraud-prevention measure that predates every digital control still in use, and it survives because it works. Digits are trivially alterable: a 1 becomes a 4 or a 7 with one stroke, an extra zero fits neatly in a gap. Words resist all of that — extending 'four thousand' into something larger requires rewriting the line.

The supporting conventions exist for the same reason. Capitalising the first letter marks the start unambiguously. Ending with 'only' marks the end, closing the space where an addition could otherwise be inserted. Drawing a line through any remaining blank space finishes the job. Together they make the written amount the authoritative one, which is why on most cheques the words legally prevail over the figures where the two disagree.

The same instinct appears well beyond cheques. Contracts write key figures twice — 'thirty (30) days' — for exactly this reason, and legal drafting conventions in most jurisdictions encourage it for any number that matters. It is redundancy deliberately introduced, and like most good redundancy it costs almost nothing and occasionally saves a great deal.

What is the difference between the two systems?
How digits are grouped, not just the words. The international system groups in threes all the way up — thousand, million, billion. The Indian system groups the last three digits and then in twos, giving thousand, lakh, crore. So 10,000,000 in one system is written 1,00,00,000 in the other. A converter that swaps the words without regrouping the digits produces nonsense, which is why both forms are shown here.
How many zeros in a lakh and a crore?
A lakh is 100,000 — five zeros, one hundred thousand. A crore is 10,000,000 — seven zeros, ten million, or a hundred lakh. Above that, Indian usage generally continues with multiples of crore rather than introducing further scale names, so a hundred crore rather than a distinct word for a billion.
Why do cheques need the amount in words?
Because words are far harder to alter than digits. A figure can have a zero appended or a one turned into a four; a written line cannot be extended without it being obvious. The convention of capitalising and ending with 'only' closes the remaining gap by marking where the amount stops, which is why the cheque-style option exists here.
Does it handle decimals?
No — whole numbers only. Conventions for the fractional part vary by context and currency: a cheque might read 'and fifty paise only' or 'and 50/100', and neither is universal. Rather than guess, the converter handles the integer part and leaves the fraction to you.
What is the largest number it converts?
About nine quadrillion, the limit at which every integer can still be represented exactly. Beyond that the converter reports an error rather than producing words for a value it cannot hold precisely.
