About the dimensional weight calculator

The divisor is where the price lives

Dimensional weight is volume divided by a number, and that number is not physics — it is a commercial lever. Moving a divisor from 5000 to 4000 raises the chargeable weight of every light bulky parcel by 25%, and it does so without touching a single figure on the published rate card. Carriers have made exactly that change repeatedly, and it is the reason a shipping bill can rise while the rates appear unchanged.

The practical consequence for anyone shipping regularly is that comparing carriers on rate alone is comparing the wrong number. Two rate cards that look similar can differ by a fifth on the parcels you actually send, depending entirely on the divisor each applies and which side of the break-even your goods sit.

Packaging is the lever you control

When a parcel bills on dimensional weight, every empty centimetre is being paid for. Volume grows as the product of three dimensions, so trimming a small amount from each cuts far more than trimming a lot from one — the reason the saving from a slightly smaller box is usually larger than it looks.

That is also why the crossover point is worth knowing rather than just the answer. A parcel already billing on actual weight gains nothing from a smaller box, and effort spent shaving its dimensions is wasted. A parcel just over the line can often be brought back under it, and this page reports the density and the break-even side by side so you can tell which case you are in.

Frequently asked questions

Why do carriers bill on size at all?
Because a van fills up before it reaches its weight limit. A vehicle carrying pillows runs out of space with capacity to spare, and the cost of that journey is driven by the space each parcel occupies rather than its mass. Dimensional weight is how that cost gets attributed — it converts volume into a weight figure so a single rate card can price both.
Where does the divisor come from?
It is a commercial term, not a standard. It differs between carriers, between domestic and international services, and between contract and retail rates, and carriers change it. 5000 and 6000 are common for centimetres and kilograms, 139 and 166 for inches and pounds. The number on your own rate card is the only one that governs your invoice.
What is the break-even density for?
It is the point where the two weights are equal, so it tells you at a glance which side of the line a parcel sits on without redoing the arithmetic. At a divisor of 5000 it is 200 kg per cubic metre — denser than that and mass bills, lighter and volume does. Water is 1,000, so anything liquid or metal is nowhere near the boundary.
Do carriers really round every dimension up?
Most do, to the next whole centimetre or inch, and then round the chargeable weight up as well. The effect compounds: three dimensions each gaining a fraction inflate the volume more than any single one suggests. The switch on this page lets you see the difference, and the cost of that rounding is reported as a percentage.
Is the answer here what I will be invoiced?
It is the calculation carriers use, but not a quote. Surcharges for fuel, remote areas, residential delivery, oversize handling and unusual shapes sit on top, minimum billable weights can override the result, and the carrier measures the box as it arrives at the depot rather than as you described it.
